Why Chimneys Leak After a Nor’easter (and What to Check First)

A nor’easter doesn’t just drop rain — it drives it sideways, for hours, into every weak point on your chimney at once. That’s why leaks that never appeared in summer downpours suddenly stain a ceiling in November.

Wind-driven rain finds entry points that vertical rain never touches: the uphill side of flashing, hairline crown cracks, and mortar joints that looked fine in August. After a big coastal storm, here’s what to check — all of it doable from the ground.

1

The flashing lines

Stand back and look at where the chimney meets the roof on all four sides. Flashing that lifted or peeled in high wind shows as a dark gap or a bent metal edge. This is the number-one post-storm leak source — see leak and flashing repair.

2

The cap

Is it still there, and sitting straight? Caps take the full force of coastal wind. A shifted or missing cap lets rain pour directly down the flue, and it’s an easy spot from the ground with binoculars.

3

Debris at the base

Bits of mortar or small brick fragments on the ground around the chimney mean the storm worked something loose up top. Mortar on the lawn is never cosmetic — it’s the chimney telling you the joints are failing.

4

Interior stains, 24–48 hours later

Water takes time to travel through masonry. Check the ceiling and walls near the fireplace a day or two after the storm, not during it. Note exactly where the stain appears — that location is the best diagnostic clue there is.

5

The damper

Open and close it. If it’s suddenly stiff or stuck, water may have gotten into the flue and started rusting the mechanism — or debris came down the chimney in the wind.

If the chimney took a direct beating, a post-storm inspection is worth it even when nothing looks wrong from the ground. Some of the worst storm damage — cracked crowns, saturated masonry — is invisible until the next freeze turns it into spalling brick. And if the brick is already soaking up water every storm, waterproofing keeps the next nor’easter out of the masonry itself.

What to do tonight

Don’t tarp the chimney or seal anything yourself — trapping moisture inside masonry does more harm than the rain. Instead, photograph any stains and note which storm they followed. When you call (857) 403-9528, that timeline tells us whether we’re looking at flashing, the crown, or saturated brick.
