Chimney Crown vs. Cap: What’s Actually Protecting Your Chimney

Two parts, inches apart, constantly confused — and when the wrong one gets “repaired,” the leak comes back. Here’s how to tell your crown from your cap and what each failure looks like.

The crown is the masonry slab across the very top of the chimney. The cap is the metal cover over the flue opening. The crown keeps water out of the brick; the cap keeps water, animals, and debris out of the flue. Different jobs, different failures, different fixes.

1

Crown failure looks like this

Cracks across the top slab, chunks missing at the edges, or a crown that was built flat so water ponds on it. On the South Shore, salt air and freeze–thaw open hairline cracks fast. Water entering through the crown saturates the brick from the top down — the fix is crown repair or rebuild, and it’s masonry work, not a part swap.

2

Cap failure looks like this

Rust, a cap that’s shifted or blown off, mesh that’s clogged or torn, or no cap at all. Symptoms show up inside the flue: water dripping down the firebox, animal noises, downdrafts on windy days. The fix is a new cap — a straightforward install, see caps and dampers.

3

The quick test from the ground

Water stains on the outside of the chimney breast or the ceiling beside it point to the crown or flashing. Water inside the firebox, rust on the damper, or debris falling down the flue point to the cap. Tell us which one you’re seeing when you call — it determines what gets inspected first.

4

Why the confusion costs money

A new cap will not fix a cracked crown, and repointing the crown area will not fix a missing cap. We see chimneys that have had the wrong one “repaired” twice before anyone looked at the right part. A proper inspection checks both, so the repair happens once.

What to do tonight

With binoculars, look at the very top of the stack: is there a flat slab (crown) with visible cracks, and is there a metal cover (cap) sitting centered over the flue? If you can’t tell from the ground, that’s exactly what an inspection is for — call (857) 403-9528 and describe what you see.

Not sure what you're looking at?
